Mortice Locks, Friend or Foe?

We don't often promote particular tools or books but the author of this guide has done such a good job that we just had to let you know what you're missing if you don't add this to your locksmith's tool kit.

To the new locksmith a locked mortice lock can appear a little daunting at first. The lock is buried inside the door and all you can see of the lock is what you can make out through the keyhole. There are a number of techniques that a locksmith can use to bypass a mortice lock, but they all rely on successful identification of the lock in the first place. Well, here's something we came across recently that makes mortice lock identification a cinch.

“The Field Guide To Mortice Locks” by J. A. Cargill is an outstanding publication that fully documents just about every mortice lock you're likely to find in the UK. Each lock has been carefully photographed internally to identify the working parts, and also shows what you'll see through the keyhole in some detail. The author also uses his extensive experience to explain the best ways to bypass each lock. The pages are laminated in an easy to use flip-over binder and the photos are even life-size! It makes an excellent addition to our ever-growing list of essential locksmith tools.

As a local locksmith business working from Southampton, Locksmith Southampton pride ourselves on the quality of our expertice and excellent value.
